Hi this is Betsy from Otto’s. I just finished reading Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand by first time novelist Helen Simonson. Already I have a string of customers in mind who I’m sure would enjoy it as much as I did. It’s about a retired British Major with a respected pedigree, living in a country village that hasn’t yet succumbed to modern developments and modern mores. He is a widower whose passion is living up to his forbears and honoring his deceased father’s wishes to reunite a pair of antique rifles. He has a son who mostly mortifies him with his crass materialism and a soul mate he is surprised to discover in the village grocery. Although the plot would be enough to recommend it, it is the character of the Major and the brilliant use of phrase to describe his feelings that makes you chuckle and say “Yeah, that’s the way it is!” When you read it you know you’re under the spell of a master storyteller. Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand—now on the New York Times Best Seller list so it’s 20% off at Otto’s, 'a booklover’s paradise in the heart of Downtown Williamsport.'
