From the first pages of the prologue until the very end, I was under the spell of this tender story of revelations, memory and friendship. Veronika, a young writer, has come to a small village in Sweden in the depth of winter, to try to begin writing again after a recent loss. She is observed by Astrid, her elderly reclusive neighbor, long caught up in her self-imposed silence. Something inside Astrid starts to thaw and she reaches out to Veronika. The friendship that develops grows with each secret they share. The landscape they inhabit is so vividly written that I felt the changes in light and weather, all of which partnered perfectly with the revelations of the two women. This story lingers in my mind with its exploration of the nature of memories and the importance of love. Each chapter starts with a line of poetry as a lyrical prelude. Perfect.
