Jackie’s Gift by Sharon Robinson is a story based on a real happening in Brooklyn in 1949 when her father, Jackie Robinson, gave a Christmas tree to a family that didn’t have one. The family had been the only one to welcome Jackie and his family into the Flatbush neighborhood the year before and when Jackie saw they didn’t have a Christmas tree, he felt so grateful for their friendship, he bought one and took it to their door. Only problem—they were Jewish and didn’t celebrate Christmas, but when their son, Jackie’s number one fan, reminded his parents that they had always taught him to accept any gift in the spirit in which it was given, they overcame their reservations and had both a menorah and a Christmas tree that year.
