Christmas in the Time of Billy Lee

Some years, the perfect Christmas picture book comes along and puts the magic back in the season for us.  Christmas in the Time of Billy Lee by Jerdine Nolen is that book this year. Times are tough in Septon's Creek and Ellie's parents seem distracted and troubled as winter approaches. They tell Ellie her friend, Billy Lee, is just in her imagination, but to her he is like the little brother she never had. He keeps her company while her parents are busy at the store and tells her stories. One story, about how it hasn't snowed in Septon's Creek for more than fifty years, sets the stage for magic. When she tells Billy Lee she wished on a star that Mama and Daddy would believe he was real, he tells her, "Ellie, there is magic in believing in something good with all your heart." Before you know it, Ellie adds two more wishes to her list and goes to work to make them all come true.  Long winter nights, especially the snowy ones, are filled with magic and Ellie's story of how she finds and unleashes her magic will, hopefully, find its way into many a family holiday tradition.
