Hi, this is Betsy from Otto’s and our First Friday guest is one of the most highly respected historians of the Civil War. Jeffry Wert has written eight books on different leaders and military campaigns of that period. His newest book, A Glorious Army: Robert E. Lee’s Triumph 1862 – 1863, illuminates the personalities and actions of the Confederate Army during four major battles that the South won, previous to Gettysburg. Lee had a dismal reputation going into this period—the newspapers labeling him “Granny Lee” after his failed campaign in western Virginia, but when Jefferson Davis appointed him to head the Army of Northern Virginia, Lee became an aggressive leader who took the offensive at every opportunity. His successes on the battlefield were classics in military strategy. Wert draws from other historians’ works and adds first person accounts of men who were there—their letters, diaries and memoirs. Come meet Jeffry Wert First Friday from 5 to 8 at Otto’s a booklover’s paradise in the heart of downtown Williamsport.
