Otto's - "a booklover's paradise" since 1877*!

In 1877, the John Dean Insurance Agency in Market Square, Downtown, Williamsport, added books, wallpaper and window shades to its offerings. Through mergings, business transfers and numerous re-locations--all in Downtown Williamsport--the books have emerged as the principal product in what is now known as Otto's Book Store. No more insurance policies, wallpaper or window shades.

One of the present owners, Betsy Rider, traces her family connection to Otto's from 1905, when her father, Jack Roesgen, went to work for H.Y.Otto, the man who had bought out John Dean. In 1928, after a ten year stint in a Philadelphia bookstore, Roesgen returned as manager. In 1934 he bought it from Otto.

Through its history, Otto's has always identified itself as a community bookstore, reflecting the tastes and interests of Williamsport and its neighbors. An extensive selection of books on regional topics is only the tip of the iceberg. Even a brief browse will reveal this area's passion for the outdoor life, fine cuisine, inspiration, self-help and do-it-yourself projects. Children rank high on this area's priorities, judging from our wide selection in both fiction and non-fiction for the younger set.  We invite you to stop by our store and see for yourself why we're truly "a booklover's paradise" since 1877.
