The Long Way Home: 1/10/2015

Hi this is Betsy from Otto’s.  The cover of the book, The Long Way Home depicts a silhouette of a village along a river and a mountain on the other side of the river—this image is upside down on the front cover and right side up on the back of the book.  It wasn’t until I was well into this psychological mystery that I understood the symbolism of this.  It deals with the nature of artistic inspiration and its effects on those who succeed (or fail) to translate it into works of art.  Inspector Gamache has retired to a small Canadian village to heal the external and internal wounds he endured in the previous segment of Louise Penny’s ten book series.  Only a neighbor’s plea for help in finding her missing husband—an artist who seems to have lost his inspiration (and possibly his life?)—brings the former inspector out of his cherished retirement.  The characters are vividly drawn and mostly come from a well educated slice of society.  And the suspense never lets up.  The Long Way Home—you’ll find it at Otto’s, a booklover’s paradise in the heart of downtown Williamsport.
