Lycoming College 1812 – 2012: Jan 28 – Feb 3, 2012

Hi, this is Betsy from Otto’s.  Lycoming College is celebrating its two hundredth Birthday!  And a fitting birthday gift for Administrators, Faculty and Students (past and present) is the history of Lycoming College by former history professor and later the Dean, John F. Piper.  Almost eight hundred pages take in the whole picture—its modest start as the Williamsport Academy in 1812 teaching high school subjects.  Then after a group of Methodists bought it in 1848, they called it the Williamsport Dickinson Seminary—a prep school (not a school of theology).   In 1929, they added a Junior College and called it the Dickinson Junior College.  Not until 1947, did they adopt the name “Lycoming College.”  Piper’s book tells all—the early bankruptcies, the “Campus Crisis” during the 60’s, the struggle to keep it a College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and finally, the diverse programs of sports, arts and campus life.  Come meet John Piper—get a signed copy—First Friday from 5 to 8 at Otto’s, a booklover’s paradise in the heart of Downtown Williamsport.
