Prohibition’s Prince Jan. 1 – 8, 2011

Hi this is Betsy from Otto’s.  In December we sold almost 250 copies of a book about a person who captured the imagination and the affection of a good many residents of our region.  And almost everyone who came in to buy the book had another story to add to the ones in the book.  Prohibition’s Prince, the Bizarre Life of America’s Millionaire Moonshiner chronicles the life of Prince Farrington.  I had to read the book to find out why so many people had such fond memories of him.  He broke the law!  Repeatedly!  But he was a gentleman and a very generous benefactor to all those in need.  During the Great Depression, when farmers were in danger of losing their farms, he paid them top dollar for their crops with which he made his moonshine.  Church roofs were repaired at his expense.  He replaced homes that had burnt down.  School children were supplied with clothes, shoes and school supplies. And politicians and lawmen had their salary supplemented with his generous bribes.  Friday, from 5 to 8, meet the author, Guy Graybill, at Otto’s a booklover’s paradise in the heart of downtown Williamsport.
