Description

When is innovation a step in the wrong direction? New research by Robert C. Castel asks precisely this question, calling on innovation gurus and military decision-makers to think before changing for the sake of change.

To achieve this, Castel uses several instances of regressive innovation, examining the affect of competing strategic cultures on military intervention. As examples, Castel presents a series of case studies drawn from diverse historical periods, locations and cultures to question whether innovation always equals increased effectiveness. Could a nation actually innovate itself into defeat?

When Innovation Failed features groundbreaking research-and calls for more. While creativity is celebrated, Castel shows that regressive innovations are neither uncommon nor limited to a certain nation or historic era.

A much-needed, hard eyed view of the dark side of innovation. A profoundly important book. Admiral (Ret.) Ami Ayalon, Former Head of Israel's Shin Bet (General Security Service).

In this fascinating book, Dr. Castel convincingly demonstrates that - the prevailing view notwithstanding - military innovation does not necessarily increase military effectiveness. Drawing on excellent case studies, Castel offers compelling explanations for why this may be so.
