All the Bright Places: 7/25/15

Hi, this is Betsy from Otto’s.  All the Bright Places is a young adult novel for readers who can handle heavy issues (and who like to laugh).  Bullying, name-calling, mental illness, parental abuse and the death of a sibling—all combine to make Violet and Finch think about suicide.  But then they fall in love.  They met on the school’s bell tower where each was thinking about jumping.  Finch saved Violet and the school thinks Violet saved Finch (“the freak,” they call him). When Violet and Finch partner in an assignment that has them going all over Indiana in search of unique attractions, they discover very lovable traits in each other and young love blooms.  Meanwhile Finch self-medicates by closing himself in a closet and Violet slowly emerges from her self-imposed isolation and guilt for her sister’s death.  But will their love be enough to save them?  In an acknowledgement at the end of the book, Jennifer Niven, the author, shares her own family’s experience with suicide and her loss of a good friend to the same.  All the Bright Places—you’ll find it at Otto’s, a booklover’s paradise in the heart of downtown Williamsport.
